Lions are only found in the wilds in Africa, but the felines have called many places home. Lions used to live in ancient Greece, the Balkans and parts of southern Russia.
According to Herodotus and Aristotle, lions were in Greece around B. Lions are the only feline species that live together in groups, better known as "prides.
These awesome cats can run as fast as 50 mph and leap up to 36 feet. Because of their lack of stamina, lions can only reach top speeds in short bursts. A lion's roar is used to signal position to other prides, so it must be extremely loud.
You can even hear a lion's roar from five miles away. Of course, lions possess extremely sharp claws. And just like the claws on house cats they're retractable, which helps prevent injury while playing. A lion's claws can reach lengths of up to 1. That's some serious slicing power. But lions don't actually chew their food. Lions swallow their meat in large chunks, while using only one side of their mouths. Lions sleep a lot With very few sweat glands, lions tend to rest during the day to conserve energy.
They become more active at night when the temperature has cooled. The tail serves a key purpose for the big cat. The lion is the only member of the cat family with a tufted tail, which is used to communicate to other members of the pride. Messages vary from directional commands to flirtatious signals.
The lionesses are usually smaller and lighter than their male counterparts. As a result, they are quicker and more adept at chasing and hunting.
They are also not weighed down or easily spotted due to the iconic mane that surrounds the head of a male lion. These creatures can reach differing lengths, weights and heights depending on whether they are male or female. Lions can be up to and over 2m in length and a particularly big adult male can weigh up to and above kg, or lbs.
Lions have four strong and muscular limbs , a flexible spinal cord and a long tail for balance. The interesting thing about lions is their forelimbs and paws. They have increased movement among the bones in their paws and forelimbs that allows them to diversify their movement when accelerating. This is a well-known method used to achieve high-velocity power and aids the lion in being faster even than a Racing Thoroughbred Horse. Through using the rotary gallop method, lions lift their limbs from the ground and land to propel themselves forward in a circular motion.
This does not mean however that they run in circles; but imagine that they land first with their front right paw, followed by landing the front left, then land their back left paw followed by the back right. This motion continues as the lion runs, showing that their paws lift and land on the ground in a rotary pattern. They lift their hind paws forward and coil themselves like a spring ready to burst free.
They then use their robust hindlimbs to propel themselves forward with impressive control and acceleration. Lions can reach their top speed in only a few feet using this burst of power method.
This impressive speed is reached by their incredible strength and power, coupled with the rotary gallop method. The males tend to be slower than the females as they can be heavier, and as a result the females typically do all the hunting for the pride.
Rest assured however, that no matter how lazy and relaxed a lion may be while lolling in the daylight, as soon the sun dips to hide behind the horizon, they become the fiercely strong, powerful, and incredibly fast animals that live up to their name as the King of the Jungle.
Simply saying that the lion can run faster than its peers and prey may lead to the simplistic conclusion that it can catch or overtake the other creatures it encounters. To think this is simply inaccurate. So how fast can a lion run? As fast as it needs to in order to catch a meal. But not very fast for very long. Weighing as much as a whopping kg , and growing as long as nine or ten feet, the lion is the biggest cat on the African savannah.
Tigers do weigh more and you may want to check jaguar vs leopard. Despite its bulk, the lion boasts a sleek shape with a balance of torque and stealth.
This tightly wound machine of tendons and muscle can accelerate at breakneck pace. But the energy this requires takes its toll and lions can only run fast over very short distances. Being a sprinter rather than a marathon runner , the lion has to be selective and prepared in any attempts to capture its prey. Not having the endurance of hyenas or wild dogs , the lion must rely on its unique set of hunting attributes. If it can get close enough to its intended target, a lion can leap as far as 11 metres 36 feet from its hiding place.
This is one edge it can use to come down upon an unwitting victim. As the only known species of cat to hunt in packs, strength and solidarity in trained formations give lions the ability to overwhelm their adversaries. Though, normally preferring to hunt with the pride , lions will go for it alone if the need arises and they can see the benefit.
With males and females of the species both willing and capable of hunting, lions prefer to stalk and circle their prey , getting to within a 30 m distance before exploding into a final charge.
