It doesn't have to engage battle to pick up an item. You have to check your Pokemon from the menu to see if it has an Item I use the Poketech App 5 to view it quicker.
You don't have to walk steps for it to hold an Item. It doesn't matter who or where you battle. It always works the same way. The Items you get depends on your level. The higher you level, the better Items you can get.
