Students are only admitted on a full-time basis. Each semester consists of two eight-week modules. After completing the eight-week module, students will advance to a higher level of classes, start new textbooks, and work with new teachers. Students sign a pledge to only speak Chinese in our language center and in all program-related activities. Rigorous admissions standards ensure that all enrolled students have the necessary language skills to learn Chinese in Chinese.
Course placement evaluations places students in classes that suit their language learning needs. Small class size and daily 1-on-1 tutorials allow for highly individualized attention on each student.
Advanced students may also choose to delve into studies specific to their academic or professional interests. Many IUP instructors hold special interest open classes outside of regular class hours including book clubs, poetry readings, documentary and film viewing, and tutorials on writing resumes and professional emails in Chinese. You do not have to be currently enrolled in a university to attend IUP.
We have students ranging from undergraduates, graduates, just graduated and those who have a few years of work experience. If you would like to earn credit, undergraduates can earn credits per semester, graduates can earn credits per semester through Indiana University. Past IUP students have participated in student sports clubs, served as a research assistant to professors in the School of Social Sciences, and attended a public lectures by famous academics and world leaders.
This is a hard question to answer specifically, but the two most important factors when determining IUP is your language level when you enter IUP and how long you study in the program. Each 8-week module, generally includes, hours of class time. The last day of classes will be on May 3 rd as scheduled, but IUP has cancelled their week-long spring break. Instead, the university will incorporate five non-class days into the schedule to allow for shorter breaks scattered throughout the year. The dates have not been finalized as of yet. IUP also announced that classes for the Fall semester will end as scheduled on December 7 th , with finals scheduled for December 8 th to the 11 th.
Thanksgiving break is still scheduled for November 23 rd to the 27 th , with classes resuming the following Monday.
