What do bonnet raisers do

If you like it then keep it but as said above get it lowered asap:whip: I had my hand in the top gap today! It's true, it does work:nod: I would imagine it works wonders when stationary just not on the move. I quite like the bonnet being raised, theres a kitted s14a on driftworks with dotz stickers over it and it suits it quite well :.

Raising the trailing edge fecks about with this, as do some vented bonnets. So much so that my car actually ran warmer in a brief unscientific test with a hugely expensive vented bonnet than it did with a stock bonnet. It looked a LOT less gash as well. It's not as easy as 'make hole, run cooler'.

I appreciate they're not to everyones taste but they let out hot air and that's a fact Its a fact if you are not moving Unless of course you have an awesom undercar aero package that doesnt allow air out beneath the engine, in which case the bonet raisers are a good idea.

BUT, its not to say what are doing is a bad thing Its true when you are moving that it will do cock all This alone must help??? Yep, I quite agree, on stand still it will let out a fair bit of hot hair.

At the moment, I'm happy with the way it looks. If worse comes worse and I start to dislike it a few months, I can always put the bonnet back to normal within a few mins. I'm considering the Apex coilover GB :D Can't wait to get it lowered, who knows, it might make the bonnet look better then :wack:. It's all to do witht he pressure differences between two relative areas, and therefore the air flow between them. IIRC the general gist is that you want to create a low pressure zone in the engine bay to draw air through from the outside, through whatever cooling devices you have.

Just trying to find the AS article The air under that car is also low pressure so it will flow out there and keep your enginebay cool. If you raise up the back of your bonnet where there is high pressure you will suck air into the engine bay at the rear as it flows into the low pressure engine bay and tries to equalise the pressures.

This will inhibit the air flow through your radiator and intercooler etc. You NEED to suck air in through the front, through the rads and then get them to exit Far too confusing for me! Basically, will I be letting out hot air through by bonnet or have I done something that's completely pointless?

Pointless Most probably detrimental for when you are moving You're still moving when you're drifting ; it's just the air is coming in through one wing vent and out the other, hence the popularity of vented wings .

You're still moving when you're drifting ; Do you still get high pressure at the top of the windscreen though?

Drift spec airvents yeah :wack:. Vaguely back on topic Pointless and shite looking You're all entitled to your own opinions but I'm happy with it and will be keeping it like that :. You asked :p :D Think I'm just digging a hole for myelf :annoyed: :wack:. The question should be "Does anyone not have bonnet dampers fitted on their z?

Has to be one of the first mods to be done. It depends on if the OP means bonnet dampers or adding a couple of washers to the hinge to make it look like the bonnet doesn't fit properly Really needs an aggressive bodykit in my opinion to carry it off, would look a bit naff on a pretty stock zed or one with a Mine's lip for example.

People do it to "let hot air out of the under bonnet area" however it actually messes up the carefully designed under bonnet airflow and raises your engine temps. It also looks like you've had a crash and not repaired the car. Oh and it also lifts the bonnet out of line of the hooks which are designed to catch each other in the event of a crash and puts it in a direct line of your face. But it is also to serve a purpose the new strut brace I'm getting apparently touched on the bonnet so will hopefully stop it catching I was contemplating this but like said earlier you really need an aggressive bodykit..

Are they literally blocks of metal under the bonnet? That silver square looks like it's causing the problem, remove that from each side and you should have a properly functioning bonnet again.

Would look frickin awful. I think the OP had bought Smudges old strutvwhichbysed to rub on the bonnet a little because he had a plenum spacer, so if the OP has a spacer he'll have the same issue. I think I'll start riding around with my doors only half latched closed, or have I not fully grasped this concept.

No, no, no. You've completely missed the point. Terms of Use Privacy Policy Guidelines. Existing user? Or sign in with one of these services Sign in with Facebook. Sign in with Twitter. Aerodynamics seems to be fickle like that. Due to the aforementioned fickleness of fluids, I would say it depends on the car - each one and quite possibly each individual car, not just each model will behave differently.

So try it and see. If it doesn't or makes it worse! Find More Posts by tristancliffe. Raising the original bonnent at the rear will not help you initially. Most of the cars have a large pressure point at the bottom of the front windshield, mostly created by the dynamic pressure sometimes referred to as the velocity pressure At the particular point the pressure is higher than the average pressure, you need to understand that is quite an amount higher than the lower pressure beneath it influenced by temperature, etc.

However you could get it to work, by adding a gurney or something similiar. For example; The DBR9 has gurney shaped elements in front of the outlets on the bonnet. These elements create a lower pressure near the outlet by redirecting the streamlines.

However such applications are much more efficient because the whole inlet - radiator - outlet shape is optimized. Thank you to all who posted for taking the time and for the very informative explanations. I tried it once, and as they say - it made no difference, other than letting fumes into the car!!

What I found did make a little difference FWD Vauxhall Nova was bending the lip up on the front of the bonnet, and putting small rubber spacers on the bonnet pins which lifted the front by about 5mm - not enough to worry the scrutineer, but enough to get more cold er air under the bonnet for the carbs!
